This week has just been so crazy busy at work (my full-time job) and because I feel like I am saying this every week now, I need to start accepting that this is just going to be the pace of life for me going forward. To make matters worse, I get really worked up and anxious when I have so many unfinished items on my to do list. When I was still in law school, I was working part-time and I would do the bulk of my studying at home. So, by default I had all this time at home to get through my normal house every-day chores. Now, I’m at work from 8 in the morning and then I don’t get home until 6 and at that point I just want to lay on the couch and pour Cheese-Its into my mouth straight from the box.
But since I’ve gone back to work full-time, I have still put pressure on myself to complete these massive daily lists of chores completely outside of my work to-dos. And then when I get home at night and look at this list, it stresses me out when I can’t get through everything. So, I have decided, that starting next week I am going to embark on a new project I am calling, “Little Tasks” – similar to my “Little Happies” post from this past fall. Little Tasks is an effort that I am making to shorten my to-do list, thus (hopefully) reducing my stress level.
Rather than write down a massive list at the beginning of the week and then slowly work through it, (but still inevitably not finish), by the end of the week, I am going to allow myself two tasks that I want to complete that evening when I get home from work. So, as I am writing this, it is Friday and I just got home from work. I assigned myself two tasks for the evening: 1. write and schedule this blog post, and 2. clean up the kitchen. Now there is laundry and about a million other things that I should do as well, but I am only going to focus on those two tasks – one of which I am finishing up now, and I already feel better.
So I’ll see how this goes for a few weeks and maybe do a follow-up post. Does anyone else deal with putting unrealistic expectations on themselves? Any advice on how to cope?
